The very nature of our social upbringing (for the entire race actually) is such that desire and its articulation - Sex, is looked down as a private, hidden, shameful matter, where everyone knows who all is doing it and doing who, but pretend to not.
Show half of it and it's titillating. Show all and it's porn. You cannot talk about it. Pure desire, or the ability to attain it is hidden knowledge.
The over imposed silence, is what gives it a colored texture. The color of guilt actually.
